Is there a need for that? Japanese are also people, so the things they can do anyone else can. Although I know there are people who automatically switch off when they see a style they don't like, that is pretty much how the biz work; you can either stick to what you got and produce what you want risking small audience or chase the rating and try to please the audience.
So far I dont see anythings new in American comics, they are still locked in the age old setting, secret agents with gadgets (spawned from Bonds movies), super heroes ('nuff said), fantasy adventure (spawned from Tolkien's, witch and wizard (who know where this came from) and what ever Startrek and StarWar produce.
So I guess the differences is not only in the art but also the story telling style and narrative medium. Take a poke at that.
